Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is NetSentry Live?
NetSentry Live is a Linux based software application that undetectably monitors Internet traffic, captures, reconstructs, and stores original content in a searchable database.  NetSentry captures email (with attachments), Chat, Web, and TELNET sessions, files transferred with FTP or Peer-to-Peer technologies, and numerous Gaming protocols.  The searchable database provides undeniable evidence of the content passing through your Internet connection when litigation is required.  Reports and analytic tools are included to better understand protocol usage, individual user activity, and suspicious behavior.  No software or hardware is required on target PC's.  NetSentry uses port mirroring on a managed switch or similar device to gain undetectable access to Internet traffic.

  2. What is the difference between NetSentry Live Basic and NetSentry Live Premium?
NetSentry Live Basic supports major email protocols (POP3, IMAP, SMTP), Web protocols (HTTP upload/download), and numerous Chat, or Instant Messaging (IM) protocols. NetSentry Live Premium supports all protocols supported by NetSentry Live Basic, plus Peer-to-Peer file sharing, Telnet sessions, FTP transfer and many internet gaming protocols.  Contact a NetSentry Sales Representative for a complete list of supported protocols.

Both products support select protocols for VoIP and Skype internet sessions; providing actual voice and Chat content. VoIP and Skype are optional packages that are available upon request.

  3. Can I run NetSentry on a Windows operating system?
No. NetSentry runs on a Linux operating system. Upon installation the dedicated machine will be formatted to run the Linux OS.

  4. When supported Internet protocols are modified, does my company need to buy new NetSentry software?
No. The NetSentry maintenance package ensures that supported protocols for the NetSentry system will continue to operate at peak performance. The maintenance package is included in the first year subscription and is an optional purchase on some levels of the product in subsequent year subscriptions.

  5. Why are VoIP and Skype functionally sold separately?
We have found VoIP and Skype capabilities are not needed by most of our customers. We offer these features as an add-on to both the Basic and Premium products.

  6. How many users does NetSentry monitor?
NetSentry comes in a range of support levels for Internet users from as few as eight to thousands.  Contact your NetSentry Sales Representative for a complete list of the support levels for NetSentry Live.

  7. If a company does not need to capture all data, can NetSentry capture just what is needed?
Yes. All data can be captured or specific data can be captured using designated protocols.

  8. Can individual records be deleted?
No. The NetSentry products capture all designated data. If an incident worthy of investigation occurs, all captured data for forensic evidence is imperative.

  9. How is sensitive information protected?
Through the administrative set-up, privileges are set providing visibility of data to only the designated company personnel.

  10. What are the hard-drive capacity requirements?
A complete solution analysis is performed for each customer. Part of the assessment is traffic throughput and hard-drive capacity. Our Sales Professional will assist during the analysis to determine and deploy the desired solution for your company.

  11. Does NetSentry sell the hardware for the system?
No. NetSentry’s Sales Professional is able to make hardware recommendations based on your company’s specific needs.

  12. What is the advantage of Live Monitoring?
Live monitoring allows the Network Administrator, or designated person, to query network traffic in near real time. When problems arise, immediate actions can be taken to solve the problem or mitigate a data breach.

  13. How soon will I know about a particular undesired activity?
Alerts can be set to immediately send an email to the designated person when certain criteria are met. For instance, key words, IP addresses, usernames or email addresses can be set to trigger an alert. Any communication sent over the network containing the target criteria will prompt an email alert to be sent to the designated email address. The alert also sends the original content attached.

  14. Can attachments in captured content be reconstructed?
Yes. With proper set-up, the NetSentry system will capture all attachments. Examples include pictures, video files, spreadsheets, word processing documents, and audio file attachments.

  15. Does it take special training to view the captured data?
No. Data is presented as original content. The designated administrator, using the point-and-click interface, can view the data with a search function or browse by protocol, usernames, chat names, email addresses or IP addresses.

  16. How is NetSentry affiliated with Guardian Digital Forensics?
NetSentry is the Products Division of Guardian Digital Forensics. Guardian Digital Forensics is the parent company providing Forensics Consulting and Forensics Certification Training.
